In 2004, Kimberly and her husband, Devan, established Incredible Creations Beauty & Barber Salon. It was Cincinnati’s first black-owned and operated husband and wife team business in Over The Rhine. Kimberly has taken the role of salon owner to another level as a platform artist, educator, and mentor. She and Devan worked together each day as one. They were best friends. Neither Kimberly nor Devan had an idea regarding what they were about to face. In 2014, Kimberly fought and won her fight with breast cancer, with Devan by her side every step the way. He never left her to do it alone and she never thought that she would lose him so suddenly just 2 years later in September of 2016. Kimberly thought that she had just faced the toughest battle of her life as she beat cancer. She decided that it was time for her to rise from the storm and walk authentically in her purpose! GOD showed her how to “Unleash The Power of Greatness” within. Kimberly has been thrust into her purpose of being an author of “Walking Without My Cane”, Life Enrichment Coach, and Motivational Speaker sharing her story of triumph and strength. Kimberly’s second book, “Walking Unscripted” is coming in 2019. She shares, motivates, and inspires others to believe that a happy, fulfilling life is possible after facing heartache. Life can and will go on and it will be amazing despite what the past looks like. She emphasizes with her audiences that your past does not have to dictate your future. Kimberly role models how to be authentic, walk in truth, live in the moment and to just BE. Kimberly also has her own podcast “Unleashing The Power Of Greatness” which can be found on iTunes, Google Play & SoundCloud.
Who are you?
I am Kimberly Nicole Johnson a woman of God, author, widow, wife, mom, nana, daughter, sister, friend, entrepreneur, life enrichment coach, survivor!
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
When I am not working, I love spending time with my sisters, girlfriends, children and the Gbabies.
What are you most passionate about?
I have to say that my number one passion is God. Also with that being said, I am very passionate about showing people how to “keep going” so they can Unleash The Power Of Greatness. That no matter what they’ve been through the sun will shine again. Life happens to all of us yet it’s all for someone else. That’s why it’s so very important to know you must keep going. It’s purpose in the “keep going”.
What inspired you to do the work that you do?
I was actually thrust into my assignment although I was being prepared since being in my mother’s womb. When my husband suddenly and unexpectedly transitioned, it was then that I began walking in the “keep going”. I started to realize others needed to also know how to do this. It’s not just for the woman who has lost her husband or loved one. It is also for anyone that has come to a place of “ what now, I don’t know what’s next”. It’s for the “comfortable, yet being unfulfilled”™️ place.
What was one of your biggest challenges on your journey and how did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges has been figuring out how to do all of this without my Devan. Because I’m so used to doing everything with him. He was my soulmate, my partner in all things. Once I understood that this is not about me, it’s about my assignment and my purpose, that pushed me full steam ahead.
What advice do you have for women who are inspired to follow in your footsteps?
I would tell them that they need to understand that it’s not always going to be easy. To whom much is given, much is required. I will say that God must be first because He will lead and guide you. Don’t give up even when you want to quit. Think about your ”why”. And lastly, if you’re doing it for self, maybe this isn’t what you should be doing. This is a very selfless walk.
What women do you look up to?
I look up to my mom, my grandmothers, my sisters, my mentors. I also look up to all of the amazing women that have gone before me, who have paved the way so that I can have this platform! I look up to women out here also paving the way for others that will follow behind them.
What helps you to stay motivated?
My sisters and my children motivate me. I think about my husband and what he would expect of me. Also knowing that people are waiting for me to “show up”.
What have been your biggest accomplishments so far?
I have been an entrepreneur since 2003 and I’ve been a solo entrepreneur since 2016. I have achieved many big accomplishments over the years. However, one of my biggest accomplishments as a solo entrepreneur would be being a published Library of Congress author. Also, having my program Unleashing The Power Of Greatness implemented into the Cincinnati Public Schools Life Ready Program. Being the first and only black female entrepreneur in Cincinnati’s Over The Rhine (OTR) for over 10 years. And so much more.
What is one way that you support other women?
I am a girls girl 100 percent. I am one of the biggest motivators on the planet. I encourage, push, and support by showing up when needed and available. I will promote, refer and overall root for my siSTAR!
What is your definition of winning?
Winning to me is knowing that God has His hands all over me. That He is guiding and orchestrating every step that I take. Winning is being able to show others through my walk that they can also be whatever they’ve been called to be. Winning is reaching back and pulling others up along side me. Winning is being whole in every area of life. Winning is a mindset and a way of life. Also understanding that in order to win you must be okay with losing at times.
