The Pursuit of Happiness

I’m so low key and behind the scenes that stepping out of my comfort zone can be uncomfortable at times. But, I have decided to do just that! It was necessary for me to grow and begin my pursuit of happiness. And while I won’t share exactly what I did at this time, I want to share how the experience feels, and what it can do for an individual deciding to take that leap.

Speaking of the pursuit of happiness, do you remember the 2006 film “The Pursuit of Happyness” starring Will and Jaden Smith?  Concisely, the film was a biographical piece based on a salesman played by Will Smith, who invested his life savings in portable bone density scanners.  He spent his time meeting with physicians to pitch the scanners, which he explains to be more beneficial than X-rays. Throughout the film, we see the struggles he endures while trying to create a better life for him and his son. During a period of about 1 year, he battled homelessness, competed with twenty other interns for one paid position as a Stockbroker, and endured a strained relationship with his wife. As I reflect on the film, I am reminded of a couple presented that I will carry with me on my personal pursuit of happiness.

Start with the end in mind

When I have an idea, I think it through to see if it is worth pursuing. This allows me to have a clear vision and saves a lot of time and headache. First, I ask myself, what is the end goal? Where do I want this to take me? How am I going to execute successfully? Personally, I get excited when I have a new idea. So much that my mind starts racing, and I get overwhelmed with ideas, which can hurt you if you are not careful. If you are like me, the next time you get extremely excited about an idea, take a deep breath and step back for a second. I want you to work smarter, not harder. In order to do that, you have to plan from A-Z. It does not have to be perfect planning, but laying out a basic project plan to start may prevent you from making some mistakes or doing unnecessary work. Write down all of your ideas, break them out into tasks, and add dates to them. Use your list as a guide to execute your ideas successfully.

Continue to move forward despite problems or difficulties. The longer you stay committed to a task or goal, the more likely something good will come out of it. During your journey, you develop yourself and learn new lessons; you face challenges and feel like you want to give up. But, the payoff comes when you refuse to give up. Devote a small amount of time to your goal each day in order to prevent burn out. This will keep you encouraged especially when you begin to see the seeds you planted grow. Journal your efforts daily so you can look back, and see your growth. As difficult as this may be, keep going. There is always a rainbow on the other side of a storm.

Never give up on your Dreams! I feel relieved that I’ve made it this far. A weight has been lifted from my shoulders.  I am proud that I deliberately made myself uncomfortable in search of a new comfort. Through my planning and persistence, I am confident that I will succeed.
