Over the last 3 days, I had the opportunity to both share my story and listen to the stories of 14 other women through Women by Choice Global’s first virtual event, Sisters Sharing Stories, and it was an amazing experience. I ended each day with a full heart and feeling more connected to my sisters. If nothing else, it was more confirmation for me that I need to create and participate in more experiences like this.
I came up with the idea for this event because my soul craves more genuine and honest interactions between women. Living in a society where interacting on social media has become the new normal in regards to human relations, I am personally over having fake interactions with people who prioritize looking perfect to others over being honest about who they are and true to themselves. I can admit that I was also guilty of falling into that trap, but I am grateful that I have since freed myself of the need to be accepted by others, especially when it means that I have to compromise who I am.
Last year was full of revelations for me. I got a lot of the things I thought I wanted only to realize that I don’t want those things at all. From the outside looking in, I thought that I wanted to be in certain spaces with certain people, but once I got in those spaces and around those people, I realized that all that glitters isn’t gold. The truth is that, unfortunately, too many people who look good on social media are toxic in real life. While they claim to support women and encourage women empowerment on social media, I have found that some are judgmental, unkind, dishonest, gossipers, and bad influences.
As women empowerment has become a trending topic and people have discovered that they can make money off women who are seeking empowerment and greater success, these people are unfortunately coming out of the woodwork with one goal in mind… to make money. They are not interested in what they can give, but what they can take. Seeing firsthand how people are using women empowerment to make money with complete disregard as to how their manipulation and bad intentions harms others was a complete shock to my system. Now, I’m not naive to think that everyone in this world is good or is moving with the best intentions, but I guess I was a little naive to believe that everyone who claims to care about uplifting women truly means it. I have spent almost 5 years of my life pouring my heart and soul into Women by Choice Global, much of the time broke and underpaid, because I genuinely desire to help women be more empowered and work together to win. So, witnessing people speak words that didn’t match their actions was really disappointing to me. I admired these people and desired to collaborate with them, but once I got around them and saw who they really were, I wished that I had never met them and allowed them to use me and my platform to further their dishonest efforts.
After witnessing and experiencing what I did, going forward, I am using a lot more discernment and paying more attention to energy as opposed to willingly allowing my eyes to deceive me. These days, I could care less about number of followers or how amazing someone’s Instagram feed looks. I’m seeking and attracting what’s real, honest, and in alignment with my mission, purpose, and values. I don’t care how much money a person makes because I’ve been both broke and very comfortable financially and neither circumstance changed my character. I don’t care how beautiful someone looks with a full face of make-up and a filter because I know what I look like when I wake up every morning and it’s not “flawless”. I don’t care about who anyone knows or what names they can drop because like I said previously, I’ve been disappointed when I finally met people I’ve admired and looked up to. I don’t care about what appears to be on the surface. What I care about is knowing who people really are and what they really value.
It’s not always easy to get up every day and move forward with the uncertainty of what the day will bring or what the future holds. What I know for sure is that we all go through struggles, get lost, lose faith, experience heartbreak, and feel like giving up. We all have a story that can be a blueprint to assist someone else to find their way. At this point in my life, I just want to be around women and people who want to keep it real and don’t mind sharing their stories to help guide others to do and be better. That’s the kind of tribe and community I am attracting and building with Women by Choice Global. If you can relate, I invite you to join us.
