A WINNING RECIPE: FAITH + FLEXIBILITY

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that there is freedom in faith and power flexibility. The only thing you can count on for sure is that things will change. In a world that is constantly changing and evolving, you can never get too comfortable with things staying the same or you will find yourself disappointed and left behind. Sometimes, it can seem like as soon as you get into a good groove, someone changes the music and speeds up the tempo. But, that doesn’t mean that you have to stop dancing, you just have to learn how to dance to a new tune. Many people shy away from change because change often means moving out of their comfort zone. Even though change can be difficult and scary, sometimes change is necessary to grow into your full potential.

Having faith makes experiencing change a lot easier to maneuver through. At this point in my life, it has become crystal clear to me that things won’t always go like I plan them to. The people I think that I will always be able to depend on may not always be there. The methods and tools that I use now to be successful may not always have the same value. The plans I have for my life can change in an instant as things are changing all around me constantly. Without faith, I would spend many days feeling lost, confused, and discouraged. Because I have faith, I don’t lose my mind every time the wind blows in a different direction than I expected it to. I simply adjust my sails, trusting that when I have no control, God is leading me where I need to go. As a woman who has always required some sense of security and some idea of what my future holds, I wasn’t always so trusting. When things didn’t go as I planned, it was like the world was ending. However, after surviving several storms that, at times, I couldn’t see how I would make it through, I learned that even when I can’t see my way out, God can see everything around me and will guide and protect me. Having faith keeps me stress-free, worry-free, focused, and happy.

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

Being flexible is powerful. If you spend your days resisting change, you will go no further than where you are now. Some people resist change because they assume that it means giving up who they are and abandoning their values. However, it is important to be open to change so that you don’t block something or someone that may be helpful to you. The people who know me personally would characterize me as laid back and flexible. There are specific standards that I won’t compromise on and certain values that I won’t surrender for anything or anyone, but for the most part I know how to go with the flow and adapt to new surroundings. You see, I learned a long time ago that there is much more to the world than the limited amount of knowledge I gained from my family, friends, and college professors. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life just knowing what I know now. It will not satisfy me to never evolve beyond where I am now. For that reason, I am not opposed to listening to different views and opening my mind to different perspectives. I don’t avoid change and I don’t mind trying new things. My father once told me that you can learn something from everybody, including a fool. I didn’t get it then, but I get it now. Every person walking this Earth has different experiences and perspectives. Even with a college education, experience has been my best teacher. I can only see as far as my limited perspective allows me based on my current knowledge and experience. If I am unwilling to be open to learn from others and find value in their experiences, even when I can’t relate, I would be forcing myself to remain on the same level. If I am never open to trying new things, I might miss an opportunity that will help me reach my full potential. When it comes to life, love, and achieving goals, there is much more power in being flexible than being stubborn.
