Fear is “Fake News”

Written By: Tomar Alston
I heard last week: “The story you tell yourself about yourself matters.” And while that seems obvious, applying the concept and living it is difficult when you occasionally struggle with self confidence.

I have always had a fear of public speaking. The thought alone gives me anxiety but it’s not just public speaking, it’s communicating in general. I love words and the power they have but when it’s time for me to express myself for some reason I can’t…at least not the way I would like to so I decided to attend a public speaking improv class for 3 weeks.

My goals for taking the class are:

  1. To receive tips and strategies on how to be a more effective communicator.
  2. To become more comfortable with presenting my brand in a public setting.

In 2 weeks I have learned so much about myself; mainly I needed to change the loop I had running in my head and make it loving & more positive. I also realized my thoughts are much more powerful than I ever really gave them credit for.

The most valuable lesson I have learned since taking this class is…

All this time I assumed outside influences were the cause of my fears but in all actuality, it’s been me all along. Once I changed my thoughts, my feelings about me and what I’m capable of changed. I still have a ways to go; however, I’m proud of myself for starting the journey.

If you are experiencing some difficulty with something you have the power to change,I would encourage you to take some steps toward improving whatever “it” is. I promise you, just some effort & research goes a long way. Read a book, watch a tutorial, take a class or seek assistance from someone who is well-versed or a professional in whatever your “it” is.

You will be both empowered & encouraged.

I wish you the best on your journey and would love to receive any feedback about something you are working on or towards.
